Complete Military Diet Shopping List

Everything on this list covers one person completing one full 3-day active phase of the military diet. If you are shopping for two people, double all quantities. Buy these items in a single grocery trip the day before Day 1 begins.

Produce

  • 1 grapefruit (medium) — or orange if substituting
  • 3 bananas (medium — you will use about 1½ across three days)
  • 2 small apples
  • 1 cup green beans (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 cup broccoli (fresh or frozen)
  • ½ cup baby carrots

Protein

  • 2 cans tuna in water (5 oz each) — look for low-sodium varieties if you have blood pressure concerns
  • 3 eggs — large, any variety
  • 1 cup cottage cheese (full-fat for best satiety, low-fat also works)
  • 2 hot dogs — beef, turkey, or chicken; look for lower-sodium options
  • 3 oz lean meat of your choice (chicken breast, lean beef, pork tenderloin, or fish)

Dairy

  • 1 oz cheddar cheese (pre-sliced or block — 1 slice is typically 1 oz)
  • 1 pint vanilla ice cream — regular, not low-fat or no-sugar-added versions (those change the calorie count and may contain ingredients that affect the plan)

Pantry

  • 1 loaf whole-grain bread — you will use 3 slices across three days
  • 1 sleeve saltine crackers — you will use 10 crackers total
  • 1 jar peanut butter — you will use 2 tablespoons on Day 1
  • Black coffee or plain tea (if you do not already have these)

Seasonings (Already Home?)

  • Salt and pepper
  • Lemon juice (fresh or bottled) — great on tuna
  • Garlic powder, herbs, mustard — optional but calorie-free flavor additions

Estimated Cost

A typical military diet grocery run in the United States costs between $20 and $40 depending on your location, whether you buy name brands or generics, and what pantry staples you already have at home. This is significantly less expensive than most structured diet programs, meal kit subscriptions, or weight-loss supplement regimens.

Meal Prep Tips Before Day 1

  • Hard-boil all three eggs the evening before Day 1 — you will use them on Days 2 and 3
  • Pre-measure your peanut butter into a small container to avoid measuring in the morning
  • Wash and cut your produce in advance
  • Open and drain your tuna cans just before eating, not in advance
  • Keep your ice cream in the freezer at all times — do not let it soften and refreeze, which changes the texture
