Which Military Diet Foods Contain Gluten?

The good news for people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity is that only two categories of foods on the military diet standard plan contain gluten:

  • Whole-grain toast/bread — used on Days 1, 2, and 3
  • Saltine crackers — used on Days 2 and 3

All other foods on the standard military diet plan — eggs, tuna, cottage cheese, hot dogs (most brands), cheese, peanut butter, fruits, vegetables, and vanilla ice cream — are naturally gluten-free. However, hot dogs and some processed items can contain gluten as a filler, so always check labels.

Gluten-Free Bread Substitutes

The military diet calls for 1 slice of whole-grain toast at breakfast on Days 1 and 3, at lunch on Days 1 and 3, and at breakfast and lunch on Day 2. Replace each slice with:

  • Gluten-free bread (check label — calorie count per slice varies by brand, typically 60–100 calories)
  • Rice cakes — 2 plain rice cakes ≈ 70 calories
  • Small corn tortilla — 1 small ≈ 50–60 calories
  • Sweet potato toast — thin slices of sweet potato, baked or toasted in a toaster ≈ 50–60 calories per slice

Gluten-Free Cracker Substitutes

Saltine crackers on Days 2 and 3 should be replaced with:

  • Gluten-free crackers — many brands available; match the calorie count of 5 standard saltines (approximately 65 calories)
  • Rice crackers — plain, unseasoned varieties work well
  • Corn chips (plain) — a small portion matching the calorie count

Hidden Gluten: What to Check

Beyond the obvious bread and cracker items, people with severe celiac disease or high sensitivity should check labels on:

  • Hot dogs — some brands use wheat-based fillers. Look for hot dogs explicitly labeled gluten-free.
  • Peanut butter — most pure peanut butters are gluten-free, but some flavored or mixed varieties are not. Check labels.
  • Canned tuna — usually gluten-free, but flavored varieties may contain additives with gluten.
  • Vanilla ice cream — standard vanilla ice cream is typically gluten-free, but some brands include cookie pieces or use barley-based thickeners. Read the label.
