The Sodium Question

The military diet's standard meal plan is relatively high in sodium, primarily from two sources: hot dogs and saltine crackers. Two standard beef hot dogs can contain 600–900 milligrams of sodium. Five saltine crackers add approximately 200 milligrams. Combined with naturally occurring sodium in other foods, a Day 2 total can reach 1,500–2,000 milligrams of sodium — approaching or exceeding the American Heart Association's recommended limit of 1,500 milligrams daily for people with hypertension.

For people with blood pressure that is well-controlled and who are not on sodium-restricted diets, this level is generally not dangerous over three days. For people on strict low-sodium dietary protocols for hypertension management, it is a meaningful consideration.

Medication Interactions

Several common antihypertensive medications interact with significant dietary changes in ways that may require dose adjustment:

Diuretics (water pills): These medications increase fluid excretion. Combined with the significant fluid loss that occurs during the military diet's glycogen depletion phase, they can cause excessive dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.

ACE inhibitors and ARBs: These medications work through the renin-angiotensin system. Significant calorie restriction and associated fluid changes can affect blood pressure response to these medications.

If you take any blood pressure medication, discuss the military diet with your prescribing physician before starting. They can advise whether your dosing may need temporary adjustment.

Lower-Sodium Substitutions for the Military Diet

People with blood pressure concerns can make sodium-reducing substitutions while maintaining the plan's calorie structure:

  • Replace standard hot dogs with low-sodium turkey hot dogs (significant sodium reduction)
  • Replace saltine crackers with unsalted rice cakes (most of the sodium eliminated)
  • Choose low-sodium canned tuna varieties
  • Avoid adding salt to any foods

These changes can reduce total daily sodium significantly while maintaining the calorie targets the plan depends on.
